about

Much of the discourse and advocacy around the needs of Black girls centers their deficits, not their strengths. The Black Girls Handgames Project is a Washington, DC based grassroots program dedicated to uplifting the joyful experiences of Black girlhood by studying and promoting the cultural tradition of handgames. Age old games such as Ms. Sue, Ms. Mary Mack, Rocking Robin and Apple on a Stick are not only examples of playtime favorites that transcend geography and time, but are also tools of empowerment. For many Black girls and women, these games represent the early narratives to their lives.

Miss Mary Mack is the first official musical work from the Black Girls Handgames Project featuring black femme artists and educators Wifty Bangura, OnRaé LaTeal, Bennu Byrd and Jaydee Polo. The song highlights each artist's journey through Black girlhood while also exploring issues on bullying, gender identity and neglect. A portion of all proceeds will go directly to the DC community based organization for Black youth, Black Swan Academy.
